Wayne Potash lists some great CDs for all ages; music that both young children AND adults can enjoy, with breif comments.
We'll be continually updating and revising this list.
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - 25 Greatest Hits
mostly instrumental with a latin edge, great stuff and fun, fun, fun! Sound like nothing else.
The Beatles - Yellow Submarine
17 remixed songs, sounds like it was recorded yesterday- fantastic! Our boys loved it when they were 3 and 5, and still love it at 11 and 13.
The Beau Hunks
Play "the Little Rascals" Music
This out of print instrumental CD is a treausure. The group re-recorded these songs in 1994, originally from the 1920s and 1930s. But it has the magic sound of the "good old days"
Harry Belafonte - Calypso
This number one album from 1956 is delightful. It includes "Day-O" and "Jamaica Farewell."
Woody Guthrie
Woody wrote This Land Is Your Land. His albums for kids sound like he's making up the songs as he goes along. He almost has a monotonous drone, but the songs grow on you with repeated listenings. Just voice and guitar. Great tunes!
Sharon Shannon
All instrumental tunes from this wonderful Irish musician. Her first album is our favorite. Fun for dancing around the house!
Pete Seeger
American Folk, Game & Activity Songs (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings)
I play almost all of the tunes on this album. This is the one that really got me going when I first got started in children's music.
Any of Pete's children's albums are great. Very stripped down sound, usually just voice and banjo. Don't forget that Pete wrote Abiyoyo, which is on one of his CDs too.
They May Be Giants - No!
Although this album is brilliant, it gets tiresome after a few listens; it's too clever and tedious. A good one to borrow from the library for a week.
